sixpence none the richer is good. no seriously, hear me out.

Ok, so you’re pretty cool, you like Kid A, and you don’t like VH1 or top 40 radio.

Chances are, if you are reading this site, you fit this profile, at least roughly. And, if you fit this profile, chances are you hate the song Kiss Me by Sixpence None the Richer. That’s fair, I respect that (I know matt hates this song).

sixpence none the richer

You shouldn’t write Sixpence off for this song (or their follow-up radio friendly cover). Hear me out. Sixpence None the Richer is a great band. No irony intended. Let me explain:

The band didn’t even plan to include the song Kiss Me on the album. It was a throwaway bubble gum song. The record company thought it would be gold. It was. Can you blame them for that? I can just hear matt saying “Damn right you can blame them!”. Calm down imaginary matt voice. There’s more.

At it’s foundation, Sixpence is Matt Slocum. He is a gifted guitar player, songwriter, and arranger. Their non-single tracks show a smart and interesting U2 influence. About the Kiss Me fiasco, Matt has said: ␄…somedays I feel as if we’ve been pushed to a precipice overhanging the sea of one-hit wonders, and until this next album comes out, who’s to say we won’t all fall in?”.

Matt also “…composed [and recorded] a piece for chamber orchestra two years ago based on C.S. Lewis’ novel The Great Divorce”. How cool is that!?

Want proof that they are worth a listen? It you are not Lars from Metallica, and then search for “This Beautiful Mess” on Schmapster. But first, take 1 minute and 10 seconds of your precious top 40 hating time and watch this video of Leigh Nash (lead singer) and Matt Slocum performing an abbreviated version of The Lines of My Earth.

  1. Can I ask you guys a massive favour? My mum is getting married again to a great bloke and I recently found out that their fave song is ‘ Kiss Me’ by YOU!! And I wanted to give them a present of your cd. But could you possibly sign it as I know it would the whole thing very special.

  2. i have no doubt about it… sixpence is way too cool compare to the other bands… i love them so much.

  3. I have to agree — Sixpence really is a quality band. Steven, you should really check into Over the Rhine. They’re a lesser-known band, but have been around for 10 years, and get some Sixpence comparisons. Look them up on PasteMusic.com for several good songs on mp3.

  4. “…calm down imaginary matt voice…” was very funny. Me, I like SNTR’s cover of “Don’t Dream It’s Over”. But then I liked it back when it was a new release from Crowded House in 1986.

  5. I think this band is nothing short of fantastic. I am glad they included the song “Kiss Me” on that album. I remember seeing them play around the Texas Hill Country when they were getting started…This band is the real deal..

  6. Hey SNTR is my favorite band, I like pretty much all their music, it´s very unique. I´m from Guatemala and even in my country they´re well known among christian and non-christian people. Keep up the great work you rock!

  7. Hey!
My daughter, Shasaieh, & I have been thinking about all of you.
But, how can I e-mail you when I have not found an e-mail contact address anywhere?
Sean, we are the ones who were on the Lake Champlain Cruise. We spent time talking to all but one of the memebers in your band & the ones who invited you to dinner the next time you come to Vermont. I’m still serious about that invite & trust you still want to accept!
I have a mailing address to write you at, but, I am hoping you or someone in your band will write me an e-mail.
Hope this finds you & that it finds you well & happy.
Your friend in beautiful Vermont, Patti

  8. HI!
I just discovered SNTR. And I must say…wow ! I play in a Band called “SUNBOX”. We are currently finishing our first c.d. I listen to SNTR in my discman to relax me and to allow me to go off to a land far away that is sweet and beautiful. Thank you SNTR. Keep up the great work! And plus Leigh Nash is very much a very classy person…I can tell by her sweet smile.

  9. P.S.
If anyone from “SNTR” is reading this and read that last posting(above this one) can you please e-mail me so I can send you a demo copy of our new c.d.?
    Thanks,
    Rob

  10. This is too funny… How do poeple think that they are writing to the band when this is so obvoiusly not the band’s website? People are funny.

  11. That’s right people are fun!!! – I don’t know, I really like sntr but but not quite sure how to put them as, christian or secular “???” Don’t really see much of a Christian testimony. But they cool

  12. I’ve been into SNTR for years, and got excited when UK radio started playing them. Then “Kiss Me” became the most overplayed song on Radio that year. Then they (or the record company) made the mistake of following it up with their cover of the La’s “There she goes” – which is a kind of a song dear to the hearts of many Brits. No one liked them much after that. Shame

I agree with John – check out Over the Rhine. Start with their early albums – pure magic.

  13. Hi i’d just like to say that the song kiss me is so good, to all those people who say it’s all been done before i think SNTR rock and have their own style.

  14. Yup, you’re totally right Steven. Sixpence None the Richer does not suck. I just finished listening to Divine Discontent and it’s pretty good.

  15. Hello all, I love Sixpence None the Richer, and I even loved the song Kiss Me when I first heard it (which was before it became amazingly famous). If you listen to the words beyond the ‘kiss me’ they have a sort of lyrical beauty to them. So I think it is unfair to classify it as a “throwaway bubble gum song.” It’s like poetry, even if it’s full of sappy love junk, it can still be beautiful.

  16. i Love sixpence
    iLove leigh Nash 2 much
i am from turkey theyre not well known here
    But they are the best
Leigh is so cute and so beautiful

u r right. there not well known in turkiye. but leigh sounds cool.
    ii söylüyor yani :))

  18. i LUV kiss me. It’s not a waste at all. Look beyond the word. You will find yourself in a world where you can fall in love and die happily.

  19. “Kiss Me” was one of those songs that you heard too much everywhere and that you got sick of. I didn’t like it that much.
My favorite SNTR song I remember was “There She Goes”. I thought it was strange/cool that a girl was singing about a girl.(I was in 3rd grade, the innocence..) Now I learn that they aren’t the original singers…:/ And the SNTR music video for it had no relation to the song and I hate when that happens. The video itself was nice (good colors, interesting visuals, etc etc), but it didn’t fit with the song…
    So, yeah.
