These are odd times. Since 9/11 there has been a movement to the simple which is very appropriate in some contexts but which, in much news and politics of all slants, would have been generally laughable at any point in the latter half of the 20th century and an easy target for the derision of Mencken in the first half.

The fact that Ben and J-Lo (or Bennifer) and their vocabulary make it to top stories frightens me.
