I was never a big Guns n’ Roses fan. While in high school it seemed I didn’t have the hockey skills or perfectly curved baseball cap peak to fit in with their followers. When the Smashing Pumpkins came along though, I was totally on board. The two bands seemed worlds apart until some time ago the following was suggested to me.
It’s just a hypothesis, but there may be evidence to the effect that The Smashing Pumpkins are the Guns n’ Roses of the 90s. Both were monster-rock bands and quintessential rock stars. The pumpkins didn’t seem to resound with the redneck audience like GnR seemed to. I think there are more parallels. What have I missed?
if i was going to compare something to gnfnr, it would probably be a rap group. eminem has more in common with axl than any pumpkin.

I saw Guns and Roses open for the Cult in 1986 at the Metro Centre in Halifax. I was not terrbily impressed but that was their early days. Wild Riot trying to be the Stones in 1972. I was always disturbed by their theme of death that went through the music – especially when packaged for a crowd that was pretty close to a Def Leppard audience. If you want loud or metal, listen to Pearl Jam, Zep, Black Sabbath or AC/DC.
Steve, you have me at a disadvantage as I have never liked the Smashing Pumpkins at all. I can’t get past the lead’s voice. If I want nihilism – which is how I read them then but could be wrong – give me the Smiths. However bad life is Morrisey has had it worse. Plus that band had the best lead guitar in human history.
Given that my references properly date me, given my druthers, it would be the Clash, the Jam or the Ramones.
Both bands had whiny, arrogant lead singers… both fired their drummers because of their drug ‘addictions’… If GNR had only opted for a guest spot on The Simpsons, we’d have one more parallel…

Its one thing to find yourself in a loop of nostalgia back to the years of one’s own youth – its another to find the loop full of the crap of youth. Next thing, I’ll be hearing Richard Marx again, girls will have pink stretchy pants and big hair and i’ll have to live through the demise of the stubbie bottle twice in my life.
Please don’t ever compare any band to GNR. They are in a league of their own.

I disagree, Smashing Pumpkins always had a depressant mood setting while GNR had a stimulating mood going. I am alot more of a Smashing Pumpkins fan myself, but I’m not trying to be biased. I guess other than the mood of their music (& the theme of their music, most of what guns N’ Roses sang about was simply sex & women. While SP, while not being completely scotfree of the crime, were mostly clean of it) could be seen as similar.

You can’t call Guns N’ Roses a hair-metal band or a glam band because they were musicians if anything. Smashing Pumpkins were also very good and they both had a drummer problem. I do not believe that you can compare succesfully though because I do not see how they are similar in any other significant ways. Both bands are worth listening too so check them out.

GUNS N ROSES was the biggest and best band that there ever was and it will always be that way but the dumass of a singer “axl” distroyed the band and when you take a man like slash out you take the balls of the band out but no dought all the orginal members were amaxing musicians but i think slash is what made guns n roses what it was…i am the lead guitarist for a guns n roses tribute band and slash’s riffs, licks, and solo’s are the best i’v ever heard or played and most of them are musical master peices…I would never put a band like smaching pumpkins in the same phrase together becuase the pumpkins don’t belong there…they are nowhere close to the skill level or talent lever as GNR, they would never and will never creat music like them it’s just not in them to stand up to SLASH, IZZY, AXL, MATT or STEVEN, DUFF…
The bloke above is an idiot. The Pumpkins were slightly better musicians than GNR (both were good though) and you seem to think Matt Sorum is a better drummer than Jimmy Chamberlin? OOOOOOOOOOOKKKK….The real comparison should be between Jane’s Addiction against The Pumpkins. GNR aren’t fit to be mentioned in the same breath as either. Still a good band though.
I really liked Guns ‘n’ Roses, I grew up listening to them. The Pumkins were later, the university years, and I very much enjoyed listening to them as well. Now I don’t listen to either band unless the radio is playing one of their songs. Back in the day, I was definitely more into GNR than the Pumpkins. At the moment, I listen to a lot of Silly Songs, Toys at Christmas, The Wiggles, soundtracks to kids movies, songs my daughter has learned at daycare, songs I’ve taught her. They are my current faves. I’ll get back into the adult music scene later in life, these little ones are small for such a short time. As for similarities between the bands…not knowing very much background about the Pumpkins makes it difficult to comment. All you folks are idiots talking about Guns and Pumpkins. Their musical styles are poles apart. GNR is hard rocking band with a blues base (Slash) and punk influenced bass (Duff). It was the right band at the right time and that kinda music will never be created again. GNR saved Rock-n-Roll from those theatrical muthafuckers like Poison, Quiet Riot, Cinderella and even Motley Crue. When Guns hit LA in 1985, all of these wussies were out of jobs. Smashing Pumpkins is a different band and has not and will not reach the amount of people GNR has reached. It’s lyrically good, but lacks the rawness and ugliness of GNR.
I think we have to enjoy GN’R in this fuckin world of rap or pop or shit like this. we still need a good rock band! or should rock be dead? hope not… thank you

The Pumpkins are heavier, deeper, more original, more diverse, better musically and better lyrically all rolled into one. I enjoy GNR but they’re a bit fake with this image which sucks in so many people. Really their music isn’t that different from most hair metal.
