farwell to douglas adams

My favourite part of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series was the frictionless spaceship. You could touch it, but not feel it.

Douglas Adams died this week at age 49. I wonder how long it will take Amazon.com to start peddling merchandise related to the deceased.

  1. In connection to the old post, selective news sympathy, I must say that this event genuinely makes me sad.

Douglas Adams was one of the first authors to truly capture my attention. As a nine year old hungry for anything to read, I read hitchhikers for the first time. Mind you, I didn’t get a lot of the jokes, but I did find it damn funny. On later readings, it’s always held its charm and humor.

I think I’m going to have to drag out my well read copy once more to say goodbye.

  2. I just read the bad news this morning here on Acts.
Adams was one of my favorite reads with both his Hitchhikers and Dirk Gently series.
    I am stunned for words.
‘So long, and thanks for all the fish’ ? Is that ok?

  3. A few great quotes from Douglas Adams from a nice story on Salon:

“We are participating in a 3.5 billion-year program to turn dumb matter into smart matter…”

“Technology is our word for stuff that doesn’t work yet”
