if you are going to spend your way to happiness, here is a tip

Having a hard time reading while Mr. Roboto is dancing here? That's how I feel trying to read Salon with those %$#@ing Motorola ads. While complaining can give one a feeling of superiority, however empty and short lived it may be, good things do happen. A good thing for anyone purchasing computer components, especially in Atlantic Canada, is Robotnik Discount Computers.

Their website is, well, lively (as the hilarious graphic to the right indicates) but don’t be too quick to judge them. The have consistently competitive prices (ridiculously cheap RAM right now) and their shipping is prompt. They claim to have live help, but I have never needed it.

Treat yourself to some RAM while it’s cheap. For $32, you can get 128MB, which will make a world of difference.

  1. “and their shipping is prompt”
add salt to taste…this is not always true of any company, but I have had a shipping problem occur with this company. The story:
~April 2000 — I saw a 13Gb 7200 rpm Fujitsu hard drive for somewhere in the range of 200 bones, and decide to order. I wait, and wait , and wait… and hear nothing. I call them, and get through to no one. Voicemail messages are left, and no one calls back. Then I fire off an email, and waited a week. Then sent another, (meanwhile, it has been about 4-5 weeks since I placed the order) and still nothing. Then I sent a particularly nasty one, and the next morning, lo and behold, I get an answer. It seems that the fujitsu drive has been backordered (it said ‘in stock’ on the page) and would I accept a 15Gb western digital drive instead for the same price? I said hell yes just get it here ASAP, and that they did , fedexing it within 2 days, and I’m still using it with no problems.
This whole ordeal has made me wary of robotnik, and I choose to use http://www.ncix.com for my orders, where good micron ram is 35$ for 128mb, and shipping is only slightly more (execpt it gets there on time!)

  2. An added note to the above:

-onvia.ca is excellent in the shipping category, getting me a 17″ monitor in about 36 hours.

-In all fairness, I have friends who have ordered from robonik, and gotten their stuff promptly, but it still does not explain why I could not get ahold of anyone there.

    – pccanada.com has some amazing upgrade bundles on the cheap, but I know of no one w/ any experience w/ them.

  3. obviously this type of thing is annecdotal. a few people will have good and bad experiences with any business.

onvia.com is the absolute BLURST! (not a typo) They have been bought and sold a few times and they have incorrect stock info and terrible customer service (in my experience).

lesson to be learned from the differing experiences smartin and I have had: do not leave your house as the world is a strange and bad place.

  4. Ever the optimist, Steven.

There are areas in the house the wise avoid – stay in bed, near the bed but away from the window, or sit behind the chair as long as the chair is big enough to hide you. Go to the toilet only at night.

  5. Thanks for the posts, guys. I had no idea RAM was so cheap. I just ordered 512 megs!

  6. I opted for NCIX — a gut/random decision, really. Haven’t gotten my shipment yet, though.

  7. I ordered 256 from Robotnik (not to be confused with robotnic) last Friday and am still waiting. It’s a race, I’ll let you know when I get mine Kirby and we’ll take into account the 3 day head start I’ve got.

  8. ‘kay, let’s compare notes: my total was $147.68 (!) for 512 megs of Micron SDRAM (two 256 chips). My order is listed as approved, but doesn’t say it’s actually shipped.

  9. $62+tax for a 256 megs Micron PC133 SDRAM. I went to their Live Help and chatted with a “Real Live Person”. I asked when my order would be shipped, and the friendly person told me it had shipped this morning via Canpar.

  10. The Race is On! Friendly Canpar man just showed up with my sweet sweet 256 megs of RAM. You’ve got until Friday at 10:25 AM for your shipment to beat out mine Kirby. Good luck, and God speed.

(I will now log off to install it…)

  11. Hey, I win! I got mine first thing this morning. But I am in Toronto so that’s probably not fair.

So shipping was very good. Now as long as my RAM works, I’m thrilled with NCIX.

  12. http://www.oosoft.de/

OOClevercache. I’ve got 512 megs of Micron CAS 2 ram and I still use this ram management software for Win2k. Once you use it, you’ll never go back. It makes your comp feel like it was freshly booted, even if it’s been on for 2 years.

  13. I’ve got to give a shout out to the good people at NCIX.com. I ordered a 128Mb Compact Flash Card from them on Thursday and first thing Monday morning I plug it in. Great shipping and great prices.

On a side note, how great is it when technology just works? Very. I just plugged in a 128Mb card and right away it works taking over smoothly from my old teensy-weensy 8Mb card. From 12 high quality pictues up to 200!
