  1. Until the Windom Earle blog allows me post non sequitors in reply to Mr. Windom’s posts, all Windom Earle posts seen here, from this point forward, will be heavily edited with little regard for consistency or content.

You’ll likely not notice at all.

  2. I think editing Windom’s posts is missing the point, as mentioned in the Yada saga from articles back.

Windom is either doing one of two things:

    1. Wrongfully promoting his own site
    2. Bringing up a point about the direction the conversations now held on the AOV are heading.

If he’s just promoting his site, then you have to look at it like SPAM. You may get fooled once, but you’ll never visit it again. IF (yes, that is capitalized) he is ‘Spamming’ then he is losing creditability for himself and his site, which will prove to be more damaging than having the AOV edit his posts. For this reason I say let him post whatever he wants, he’ll get what he deserves.

Argument #2: I’ve been a friend of Stephan’s for years. The man is a genius, providing cultural critiques and setting trends years before it’s time. I think he’s trying to say something about the state of the conversations held on AOV with these posts. This isn’t the first time he’s done this, as shown here and more importantly here. The AOV is not my site, you have the right to do whatever you want with it, but I believe letting Windom post whatever he wants will expose him only as he actually is, be it spammer or genius.

In closing, I’d like to bring to light this conversation held earlier on the AOV. I had posted something slightly off topic, and Jevon replied with:

“Is it just me or is this reply system turning into a venue for quick wit and inside jokes? I know I have contributed to more than my share of those posts… But it is just an observation.”

This comment was then addressed by Steve, a fellow AOV author:

” {…} About Jevon’s comments on the state of the aov replies feature: it has only been up for a week now. Give it time. The beauty of an open system like this is that people can post whatever they choose. It’s like going to a rock concert: you curse the stupid bastards that scream in your ear and kick you in the head, but if they weren’t there, it wouldn’t be a rock concert. Like aov posts themselves, I expect the conversations to vary in seriousness and sillyness.

    Straight from the horses mouth.

Choose your path wisely Matthew, for it will dictate the direction of the AOV.

  3. neh.. I’ve posted a few times but I’ve been largely ignored.. probably something to do with my content or that people feel that they don’t know who I am. (I’m Matt’s brother)
Maybe I’m misreading this, but it seems like way too much thought but into something entirely trivial on a what’s always been an interesting but trivial site.

“Choose your path wisely Matthew, for it will dictate the direction of the AOV. ”

I hope this is a sorta tongue in cheek thing…
Choose your path wisely for you must lead the people, brother.

  4. I guess that does sound cheesy, point taken.

I’m probably making a big deal out of nothing, I had my backpack stolen tonight, maybe I was taking it all out on Dorrell.

I love you Matthew, forgive me?

  5. Answers.

“The bigger question is who the fuck thought black on red was good. Who?”
Yes, who indeed? When clearly red on black is so much more hip.

In reference to the whole rock-concert analogy.
To my knowledge I have never, and I say this without the slighest bit of pride or shame, been called a “nice person”. I am always slightly more than willing to deliver a few kidney punches to the clowns in the row ahead of me, provided they have no real means of retribution.
The great thing about f_cking with Stephan is that at the very worst he’ll just end up taking out his built-up inner frustration and dejection on whatever hideous progeny he eventually forces upon the world. Besides, “artists” like Stephan need “oppresion” from “the man” to keep “their music” “real”.

    Loosely concerning Dr. Baconite:
Beware of applying the title “Interesting, but Trivial.” It fits much more often than not.
I bought a hardcover copy of a Mordecai Richler book of essays (at a significant discount from a publishers outlet) the day before he died. End of story.
“probably something to do with my content or that people feel that they don’t know who I am.”
Yes. “Dr. Baconite” is simple too anonymous. Not like “Matthew” or “Steven”, both of which are much less common and much more identifiable, and therefore more trustworthy.

“I love you Matthew, forgive me?”
No. Not until Vinceland is up again. My new backpack will be filling the gaping chasm left vacant in my life until then.

“join the discussion on this high tech, virtual notice board.”
No. Are you kidding? A virtual notice board? What? You are kidding. Right? (Keep in mind that any reply is now subject to “windom post editing”).

    In reference to Stephan.
I’ve been friends with Stephan for months, and have, for the most part, regreted the entire endeavour.

  6. The official aov policy for reply moderation is that the genius who made the original aov post gets to do whatever he wants with the thread that follows. We have all chosen to use our power seldom, if at all. For example, the only time I can remember editing posts was to make a link that someone posted active (presuming they didn’t know that was allowed) and once on the request of a poster who was having post-posting pangs of guilt).

I do occasionally read a reply and think “get your own website”, but like I said about rock concerts (which Vince quoted above), the beauty of an open system like this is that people can post whatever they choose.

As for Matt’s threat of editorial tyranny, I don’t worry at all. First of all, he knows Stephan/WindomEarle quite well (I frequently lose phone messages from one to the other). Second, the posts he’s talking about usually say little and mean less, making it difficult for him to put make people think Windom is saying something he’s not. He’s not threatening to change Windom’s posts to say that he now supports the sale of organs of executed Chinese criminals to rich Americans (this was a random controversial topic, btw, I don’t know Matt, or Stephan’s opinion on the topic). Matt said it himself: “You’ll likely not notice at all.”

Editing posts in a linear thread-based system often more trouble than it’s worth. By the time a post gets changed, it has often sparked replies that will no longer make sense if the original post is edited/removed. Note how this post was marked as changed, as that was the case.

One of the key features (and it is a feature, not a bug) of the replies on aov is that they are not an open forum where anyone can start a topic. They are simply peoples replies to aov posts. This changes the dynamic of the conversations and I think limits them (perhaps I should say ‘focuses them’) is a good way I think. The topics often stray from their origin, but such is the case with any healthy conversation, in the clean and safe online world, or in the dirty and cruel “real” world.

Originally, when Matt and Rob suggested the feature, I worried quote a bit about putting replies on aov. I thought it might ruin it. I thought (and still think) that one of our strengths is that we don’t try to do too much. We don’t promise regular publishing schedules. We don’t offer free email. However, there were people I knew were reading aov whose opinions I respect (even though I often disagree).

I have been very pleased with the replies feature. This thread is a perfect example of how they can work very well. A few good examples:

  7. Hmmm…
Yes, now that I think about it, everything, excluded what comes out of my mind is trivial. It’s quite often uninteresting though.

Maybe I should post under a more friendly and distinctive name. Like John.
